MELBOURNE (MarketWatch) -- BHP Billiton Ltd. (BHP.AU) said Tuesday it plans to shut down one of the two shipping berths at the Hay Point coal terminal in Queensland state for a month for planned maintenance.
The closure at Hay Point, which is part of BHP's BHP Mitsubishi Alliance joint venture with Mitsubishi Corp. (8058.TO), could tighten global coking coal markets.
"BMA confirms that from July 7 to Aug. 10, 2010, Berth 2 at its Hay Point operations will be shut down to complete planned maintenance work for berth fender replacement," a spokeswoman from BHP said in a statement.
BMA, the world's biggest exporter for coking coal used in the steelmaking process, experienced disruptions at Hay Point earlier this year when damage caused by tropical cyclone Ului forced it to declare force majeure on coal shipments while repairs were carried out.
The joint venture's mines have the capacity to produce up to 58 million metric tons of coal a year and the bulk of this is exported through Hay Point, which has an annual capacity of up to 45 million tons a year.
